เครื่องปรับแรงดันไฟฟ้าโดยทั่วไป (Static Voltage Stabilizer) ที่ทำหน้าที่ปรับแรงดันไฟฟ้าให้คงที่เท่านั้น (ป้องกันไฟตกและไฟเกิน) ไม่สามารถป้องกันไฟกระพริบ หรือ Voltage Sag ได้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นชนิด Servo หรือ Electronic ก็ตาม Voltage sag – คือปรากฏการที่ไฟตกเฉลี่ยที่ 30 – 40% เป็นเวลาประมาณ 8 – 10 mSec ซึ่งหากมีปรากฏการณ์เช่นนี้เกิดขึ้นระบบการผลิตหรือเครื่องจักร เช่น เครื่อง CNC หรือ ลิฟต์ เป็นต้น ก็จะหยุดทำงานเพราะเครื่องจักรหรืออุปกรณ์ดังกล่าวโดยส่วนใหญ่จะประกอบด้วย PLC หรือ Relay ที่รองรับไฟตกได้เฉลี่ยไม่เกิน 20%
การแก้ปัญหาดังกล่าวข้างต้นโดยการติดตั้ง Static Voltage Stabilizer จะไม่สามารถแก้ปัญหาได้เนื่องจาก Static Voltage Stabilizer มีความไว (Response time) ไม่พอ – ปรกติจะอยู่ที่ประมาณ 20 – 200 mSec
อุปกรณ์ที่จะแก้ปัญหา Voltage Sag/dip ได้ดีคือ ยู พี เอส – UPS แต่การติดตั้ง UPS มีข้อเสียคือเสียค่าใช้จ่ายในการซ่อมบำรุงสูงเกินไป เช่น การเปลี่ยน Battery ทุกๆ 4 ปี เป็นต้น (ประมาณ) ต้องติดตั้งในห้องปรับอากาศ และถ้าหากโหลดเป็นมอเตอร์ก็มีความจำเป็นต้องเพิ่มขนาดขึ้นด้วย – เป็นการแก้ปัญหาที่ต้องลงทุนสูงเกินไป ดังนั้นการแก้ปัญหาที่เหมาะสมที่สุดทางหนึ่งคือการติดตั้ง Dynamic Voltage Stabilizer หรือ Voltage Sag Protector ซึ่งราคาต่ำกว่า UPS ประมาณ 30% แก้ปัญหาได้ตรงประเด็นและสามารถรองรับแรงดันไฟฟ้าตกได้มากกว่าด้วย (สามารถรองรับแรงดันไฟฟ้าตกได้ถึง 50%)
นอกจากนี้ Dynamic Voltage Stabilizer – DVS ยังสามารถช่วยลดค่าพลังงานไฟฟ้า (Energy Saving) ได้ด้วยในกรณีที่แรงดันที่รับเข้ามากกว่าแรงดันที่ Load ต้องการ ซึ่งค่าเฉลี่ยในทางปฏิบัติจะประหยัดได้ประมาณ 4% - 6%
Voltage sags, a short-term reduction of RMS voltage, are the most common events that affect power quality and they are also the most costly. Equipment used in modern industrial plants such as process controllers, PLCs, adjustable speed drives, robots, relays and contactors becomes more sensitive to voltage sags. Voltage sag as defined by IEEE 1159 is less than 1 min and more than 8 msec., the recommended usage is “a sag to 70%”, which means that the line voltage is reduced down to 70% of the normal value, not reduced by 70%, or line voltage down 30% of normal value. From statistic the most of duration is about 10 msec. “Secure” Dynamic Voltage Stabilizer is a solution.
Voltage sag can cause the equipment to malfunction or break down. This malfunctioning can lead to loss of production waste of raw material and man-hours. In such cases a UPS becomes bulky and uneconomical solution. The servo and electronic voltage stabilizers cannot give fast and sufficient correction. Other equipment such as transformers, tap changes, and line voltage conditioners do not have fast enough response and required power capacity. Hence under these conditions a Dynamic Voltage Stabilizer or Voltage Sag Protector is the only solution, and save power in case of input voltage higher than load need.
